What AI and Vibe Coding Have Actually Looked Like for Me So Far

AI and vibe coding have made it much faster to go from idea to working prototype—but they haven’t replaced real engineering. The biggest gains come from rapid iteration, scaffolding, and exploring options. The biggest risks show up in architecture, integration, and long-term maintainability.
In practice, AI shifts work rather than removes it. You still need to validate outputs, enforce structure, and make the decisions that turn generated code into reliable systems. Vibe coding is useful as an early-stage accelerator, but it only works well when paired with discipline, review, and clear constraints.

Why I Looked at This
I did not come to AI and vibe coding because I thought software engineering had suddenly become easy. I came to it because the cost of exploring an idea had changed, and I wanted to understand what that change meant in practice.
At first, the attraction was straightforward: faster iteration, less blank-page friction, and a better way to move from rough concept to working prototype. But very quickly, the work stopped being about prompts alone. It became about something more demanding and more interesting: how to turn AI-assisted output into systems that are coherent, maintainable, and worth keeping.
That is really what this journey has been for me so far. Not a search for shortcuts, and not a campaign to automate judgment away. It has been an extended effort to learn where AI genuinely improves software development, where it only appears to help, and where the human part of the work still does most of the heavy lifting.
What I Was Trying to Build or Understand
Over time, this stopped being a single experiment and became a broader development ecosystem.
I have been looking at AI-assisted development across a range of connected efforts: desktop AI coding applications, Codex-style workflows, local and SaaS model integrations, agent-based development systems, AGENTS.md-driven structure, developer UX improvements, context and database backends, build and packaging automation, and even mobile control or observability for coding platforms. In other words, not one isolated repo, but a growing set of related attempts to understand what an actually useful AI development environment should look like.
Part of the work has been comparative. I have wanted to understand how tools like Codex fit against the workflow I actually need, not the workflow tool marketing tends to describe. Part of it has been constructive. I have also been trying to define what I would want from a practical AI coding system if I were building around my own constraints, preferences, and standards.
That has made the central question less about whether AI can generate code and more about whether it can participate productively in a full development loop: planning, scaffolding, iteration, correction, architecture, packaging, release, and operational control.
The Setup
Most of my experience with AI and vibe coding has happened in a mixed environment rather than a neat, single-tool stack.
On one side, there are the models and interfaces themselves: systems that are good at brainstorming, scaffolding, transformation, summarization, UI generation, and rapid iteration. On the other side, there is the reality of building software that has to hold together over time. That means local and SaaS model tradeoffs, context limitations, repo awareness, environment constraints, packaging requirements, release considerations, and the recurring need to impose structure where the model naturally tends to produce plausible but incomplete output.
I have been working through these questions in the context of developer-facing products and AI-assisted coding tools, which makes the setup more demanding than a simple prototype. Once you move into desktop applications, agent coordination, backend context storage, installer workflows, or mobile observability, the quality bar changes. A generated function is one thing. A coherent product surface is another.
That gap between “the model can produce something” and “the system behaves the way I need it to” has shaped most of what I think about this space.
What I Tried
I tried the obvious things first.
I used AI as a drafting engine for code, product thinking, workflows, and UI direction. I used it to compress the time between idea and first implementation. I leaned into vibe coding where it made sense: letting the system help me get momentum, sketch the structure, fill in routine patterns, and give shape to concepts before I had fully formalized everything.
From there, the work became more disciplined. I started treating prompts less like one-off requests and more like interfaces into an engineering process. That meant tightening instructions, being explicit about expected behavior, defining constraints earlier, and forcing clearer structure around outputs. In parallel, I looked at agent-based approaches and AGENTS.md-style organization because I wanted to understand whether multi-step, role-oriented workflows could make AI output more consistent and more useful over longer tasks.
I also pushed beyond pure code generation. I explored how AI-assisted workflows behave when the problem includes developer UX, context management, release packaging, environment setup, and operational concerns. For example, thinking about mobile visibility or control for a desktop AI coding environment immediately exposed a different class of design questions. It was no longer just about generating features. It was about network assumptions, reliability, observability, security boundaries, and what a sane control surface should look like when the tool is not operating in a perfect lab environment.
That broader experimentation has been one of the most useful parts of the journey. It forced me to evaluate AI not only as a code helper, but as part of a full product and engineering workflow.
What Worked
The most obvious benefit has been compression of early-stage effort.
AI is very good at helping me move from rough intent to something tangible. It reduces the startup cost of exploration. It can provide structure where there was none, produce reasonable scaffolding quickly, and make iterative design work feel less linear. For prototyping, reframing, outlining, comparing options, and getting unstuck, it has been genuinely valuable.
It has also been useful as a pressure-testing partner. Even when the first answer is not correct, it often helps expose the shape of the problem faster. That has been true in coding, architecture discussions, workflow design, and even in how I think about interfaces and packaging. A model can be wrong in ways that are still productive, because the wrongness surfaces assumptions that need to be made explicit.
Another thing that has worked is using AI to accelerate breadth before I narrow into depth. It helps me generate candidate approaches, rough implementations, alternative structures, and comparison points quickly. That does not replace engineering judgment, but it does improve the speed of exploration.
And when the problem is constrained well enough, AI can save a meaningful amount of time on repetitive work: boilerplate, refactoring passes, formatting, documentation framing, and first-draft implementation logic. Those wins are real. They are just not the whole story.
What Broke or Fell Short
The main pattern I have seen is that AI is strongest at producing something plausible and weaker at preserving correctness, coherence, and operational realism across a larger surface area.
That matters a lot once the work moves beyond isolated snippets.
The more system-level the task became, the more I had to watch for shallow reasoning, hidden assumptions, invented details, fragile abstractions, or solutions that looked complete but collapsed under real constraints. This showed up in different ways: architectural oversimplification, inconsistent treatment of state, weak edge-case handling, UX suggestions that ignored actual workflow friction, and implementation choices that would have increased maintenance cost if I had accepted them uncritically.
Vibe coding also has a failure mode that is easy to underestimate: it creates momentum faster than it creates confidence. You can make visible progress quickly while still accumulating review debt. That has been one of the biggest lessons for me. Generated output often shifts work rather than eliminating it. The work moves downstream into validation, correction, cleanup, integration, and deciding what should never have been accepted in the first place.
I also found that once packaging, deployment, environment configuration, or operational control entered the picture, the limits became clearer. It is one thing to generate a feature. It is another to produce a solution that survives installer requirements, release processes, firewall limitations, state management, or real-world communication patterns between systems.
That is where the difference between “interesting demo” and “credible software” becomes impossible to ignore.
What I Learned
The biggest change in my thinking is that I no longer treat AI-assisted coding as a question of output quality alone. I treat it as a question of workflow design.
The value is not just in what the model can produce. It is in whether I can structure the interaction so that the output is reviewable, composable, and aligned with the actual problem. That means the human role is not disappearing. If anything, it becomes more managerial, editorial, architectural, and adversarial in the best sense. I have to define the boundaries, test the assumptions, reject the attractive nonsense, and decide what belongs in the system.
I have also learned that the phrase vibe coding can be useful, but only if it is used honestly. At its best, it describes a legitimate exploratory mode: fast movement, loose early structure, and intuition-guided iteration. At its worst, it becomes an excuse not to impose discipline. My own experience has pushed me toward a middle ground. I still value the speed and creative flexibility, but I trust it more when it is paired with explicit constraints, deliberate review, and a willingness to slow down before calling something done.
Another lesson is that the most important problems are often not the ones the model makes most visible. The hard parts are usually around integration, architecture, maintainability, product fit, and operational constraints. AI can assist with those areas, but it does not remove the need to think through them. In my experience, that remains the core of the work.
What I’d Do Differently
If I were starting this journey again, I would impose structure earlier.
I would define tighter requirements sooner, separate exploratory prompting from implementation prompting more clearly, and formalize review standards before letting generated work spread too far across a project. I would also spend less time evaluating outputs at face value and more time evaluating the workflow that produced them.
I would be quicker to ask whether a model-generated solution matches the real operating environment rather than whether it merely sounds reasonable. That distinction matters much earlier than it first appears.
I would also treat context design as a first-class concern from the beginning. Whether the work involves agents, coding assistants, backend memory, or multi-surface tools, the usefulness of the system depends heavily on what it knows, how consistently it knows it, and how well that context is constrained. A lot of frustration in AI-assisted development comes from pretending context is incidental when it is actually central.
Finally, I would be more explicit with myself about the goal. Sometimes I was evaluating AI as a coding tool, sometimes as a product collaborator, sometimes as a workflow accelerator, and sometimes as a design partner. Those are related roles, but they are not the same. Being clearer about which role I needed in a given moment would have saved time.

This is probably the simplest honest summary of where I am today: AI and vibe coding have been useful, sometimes impressively so, but never in a way that removed the need to think carefully. If anything, they have made clear just how much of software development depends on judgment, structure, and follow-through. That has been the real lesson for me so far.
